Love for rural folks drives Thuraya back to Nigerian market

After a failed attempt to capture the Nigerian telecom market some few years back, Thuraya Corporation, providers of Thuraya satellite phone services, may have reviewed its business strategies to come back to the market.
This time around, the satellite communications services provider is coming with a rural telephony initiative, meant to help the government achieve its aim of connecting telephone services to the underserved areas of the country. Thuraya is a satellite phone which gives its users access without network barriers but high tariff and acquisition cost of the technology kept it far from the reach of the non-rich subscribers and only a few Nigerian subscribers acquired it when it debuted. Ironically, that was also when the GSM operators were even devising means of bringing services down, a lot cheaper, to lead competition and as well get a lot of Nigerians connected to the talk business which has eluded them since the national carrier, NITEL went comatose. However, last week, the leading satellite Communication provider made a grand come back, announcing to media men, in Lagos, that it has reviewed its operations in Nigeria to see how it can accommodate the underserved areas which have attracted its soft spot since it located the communications market called Nigeria. The company said it was more committed and capable now, to offering access to telecommunications anywhere in Nigeria, especially beyond the coverage area of GSM networks. But it however made it clear that it was not in the league of GSM operation and could not compete with the GSM operators in either service provision, tariff comparison or subscriber base. Its core value was to provide uninterrupted and uninhibited satellite communication to corporate bodies and individuals irrespective of location, topology or network considerations. The Country Manager, Thuraya Corporation, Mr. Abdullahi Ali, said his company was poised to key in on the quest by Nigerian authorities to provide access to underserved areas, either in rural communities, on lands, mountains, rivers, lakes, sea, or high and low valleys, through its newly initiated rural telephony solutions project. This project according to Ali would establish Public calling offices and payphones with customized low calling rates which would begin from as low as forty two naira per minute to enable access even to the remotest parts of the country. He also stated that Thuraya in its bid to satisfy the communication and security needs of its customers in Nigeria, would offer tracking and security solutions in the whole of Nigeria, even as it was also working on more solutions and more budgets for Nigeria, to engender a more communications economy with low rate to encourage local participation. Thuraya’s capability and strength stretch access beyond limits, making its Nigerian subscribers, for instance, enjoy same service and tariff structure in Europe, South Africa or the Middle East, without any roaming arrangement. Ali stated that Thuraya was bringing the prices of its services down contrary to the belief that it was way out of the reach of the poor. To that extent, he said that the phones have been reduced to fit into the style and fashion brands that have seen the GSM appealing to more people. “Now Thuraya is small and light, has everything like the GSM phones, but can offer service in remote areas. Such models like the Thuraya SO-2510 (130 grams), is a lightweight pocket sized satellites phone, highly portable and more friendly. It uses GPRS 60kpbs; Triband SG-2520 (180 gramm) and equipped with integrated camera 1.3 Mega pixel, plus video. It connects Bluetooth, infrared (IR), and USB. This enables one to do all you can do with the GSM smart phone, including other activities on the antenna and the GPS”. Ali said that his company targets big corporate organisations, government agencies and other individuals to key in on the initiative by acquiring its services and extend it to the rural areas where people were yearning to be served. He said this would boost the telephony level of the country and pitch such organisations higher in the exhibition of strong Corporate Social Responsibility CSR, to the people and country in general.
